titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR PREPARING PARA-TOLUENE ACID AND MONO-METHYLER EFTALATE.
abstract p-Toluene acid (I) and monomethyl trephthalate (II) are prepd. by oxidn. of a mixt. of p-xylene and methyl p-toluate, in ratio by wt. of 2:1-1:4, with O2 or a gas contg. O2. in the liquid phase, using a catalyst which is a mixt. of (a) Mn or an Mn cpd. which is soluble in the reaction system, and (b) Co or a Co cpd. which is sol. in the reaction system, the gram-atom ratio of Mn:Co, as metals, is 1:99-90:10, and the total of (a)+(b) is 80-500 ppm. w.r.t. the reaction mixt., as metals. Oxidn. is at between 170 and 200 degrees C. The mixt. of (I) and (IIe is esterified with methanol, to form methyl-p-toluate (IV) and dimethyl terephthalate (III); III is recovered, and the remaining liquid, contg. Iv is recirculated, with fresh p-xylene, to the oxidn. reaction. (III) can be obtd. on the technical scale from p-xylene. Prodn of by-prods., e.g. CO2, CO or tarry materials is reduced; in partic., prodn. of p-cresol is reduced. The yield of (I)+(IIe is up to 10% higher than when a Co catalyst is used alone; the rate of reaction is high, without addn. of a lower fatty acid, e.g. acetic acid. The mixt. of I + II is very pure and has less colour and a lower content of fluorescent impurities. There is less corrosion of the plant, since fatty acid and halogen (cpds.) promoters are not present.
