| abstract | An aq. soln. of 1,3-dimethylol-5,5-dimethyl-hydantoin (I) is produced by mixing HCHO with 5,5-dimethyl -hydantoin in a molar ratio of 1.85-2.4:1, adjusting the pH to 7-9 and allowing the reaction to take place at 22-65 degrees C with in the specified pH range. (I) is used as an antimicrobial to prolong the shelf-life of pastes, soaps, skin creams and liw. shampoos. The aq. soln. contains pref. 50-60% (I) and 1% fre HCHO (with its unpleasant odour and skin-irritating properties) and =97.5% of the solute is (I). |
