titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF DIVALENT HYDANTINATION CONTAINING POLYMERS.
abstract Polymes contg. divalent hydantoin gps. in the main chain of formula: (in which R1 is H or a monovalent organic gp.) are prepd. by reactg. (I) a polyfunctional glycine deriv. of formula (B)b-Z-(A)a (in which Z is an organic gp. of valency at b; a is 1-6, b is 0-5 and a+b is 2-6; B is -NH2, -OH, -COOH or corresp. ester, or a carboxylic anhydride gp. attached to adjacent C atoms in Z; A is a glycine gp. of formula R1HN-CR1-CO or -HN-CR1-CO and X is -OR1, SR1, -NHR1 or -NR1R1), with (II) if B is not -NH2, a polyfunctional cpd. capable of reaction with B and contg. an -NH2, and (III) a diaryl carbonate. The polymers are used as electrical insulating materials, machine parts, etc. in the form of coatings, e.g. wire enamels, adhesives, laminates, films, fibres, etc. The use of polyisocyanates is avoided. A wide range of polyhydantoins can be made which, esp. aromatic types, show excellent heat stability, electrical insulation and mechanical properties, and good solubility. Hydantoin rings can also be introduced into other polymers.
