| abstract | Cpds. of formula (I) are new: (where R = -CH(Cl)COOR" when R' = benzyl; or -CH2Cl when R' = H; R" = alkyl). (I) are intermediates in the preparation of pharmaceutically-active compounds. A soln. of 72 ml. sulphuryl chloride in 250 ml. acetic acid is added over 1 hour to a soln. of 272 g. methyl alpha-(3,5-dimethoxy-4-benzyloxybenzoyl)acetate in 510 ml. acetic acid. After stirring for 1/4 hour, 340 ml. conc. HCl are added and refluxed for 1 hour. Working up gives 164 g. of omega-chloro-3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyacetophenone, m.pt. 148-150 degrees C. |
