abstract R = Ph, 2-furyl, or 2-thienyl Cytostats, active vs. mastocytome cells and fibroblast cultures. Dose 1-50 mg./d. (IV) (1 g.), PhCHO (20 ml.) and anh. ZnCl2 (0.5 g.), were shaken 5-6h. at 20 deg., the reaction being followed by T.L.C. on SiO2, run in 6% MeOH in CHCl3, and sprayed with 1% Ce (IV) - ammonium nitrate in 50% H2SO4. The reaction mixture was dild. with CHCl3, washed with H2O, the H2O back extd. 2 x with CHCl3, and the CHCl3 dried and evapd. in vac. The residue was triturated with pentane, dissolved in Me2CO (10 ml.) and added dropwise to pentane (100 ml.) and filtered. 1 g. was dissolved in CHCl3 contng. 2% MeOH (sat. soln.), chromat. on SiO2 (200 g.) eluting with the same solvent, the appropriate fractions (T.L.C. uniform) combined, and repptd. from Me2CO- pentane, giving (I), m.p. 182-5 deg. (recryst. from EtOH, m.p. 245-6 deg.).
