titleOfInvention Recovery of formaldehyde from aqueous formaldehyde - streams
abstract Recovery of formaldehyde from aqueous formaldehyde streams. N5-. By (a) contacting the aqueous stream with a liquid alcohol having >4 C atoms at a temp. below the alcohol-formaldehyde dissociation temp., so that at least a part of the formaldehyde is extracted into the alcohol, (b) separating the alcohol from the aqueous tream, and (c) separating the alcohol and the formaldehyde by distillation at a temp. above the alcohol-formaldehyde dissociation temp. Recovery of formaldehyde from aqueous solutions is normally difficult because of the formation of hydrates of formaldehyde, such as methylene glycol and (CH2O)nH2O, but the use of the C6-10 aliphatic alcohol enables the formaldehyde to be effectively separated from the aqueous soln. in the form of a hemiformal, which can be subsequently dissociated into formaldehyde and alcohol.
