abstract In the liquid phase oxidation of C4- 8 saturated hydrocarbons to alcohols and ketones with a molecular oxygen containing gas in presence of boric acid or a dehydrated form thereof at 140-180 DEG C., the partial pressure of water in p.s.i. over the reaction mixture at T DEG C is more than P but not more than P1 given by the equations log10P1 = 0.0107T + 0.068 log10P = 0.0175T - 1.85 The intermediate boric acid esters may be isolated, but are usually directly hydrolysed to the desired alcohol, e.g. by heating with water. The end product contains ketone as by-product. Specified starting materials are cyclopentane, cyclohexane, cycloheptane, cyclooctane, mono and dimethylcyclohexanes, n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane and the methylpentanes.
