abstract | Silica, alumina or alumina-silica of particle size less than one micron and having surface hydroxyl groups is reacted at below 115 DEG C. with a Group IVA, VA, VIA metal halide or oxyhalide in the vapour state, neat or diluted by an inert oxygen free carrier gas, to incorporate metal and halogen components on the surface. Specifications 969,762, 969,763, 969,764, 969,765 and 969,766 also are referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst suitable for polymerizing up to C8 mono- or di-olefins, identical with that of Specification 969,766, except that the halide treated silica or alumina or alumina-silica component is produced by a modified process involving the use of the vapour of the halide below 115 DEG C.
