abstract A dairy animal monitoring system for a herd of dairy animals comprises a dwelling space for the herd of dairy animals, one or more controllable stress reducing means for reducing or preventing stress in the dairy animals, and a control system for the dairy animal monitoring system, which comprises a subset determining device, for determining or entering a subset of the herd, an identification system for identifying the dairy animals from at least the subset, and a stress detection system for detecting a value of a stress indicator in a dairy animal of the subset. The control system is adapted to control the one or more stress-reducing means in a plurality of the dairy animals in dependence on the at least one detected value. The subset of the animals are the indicator animals, which exhibit earlier estress. This allows the controls to take measures for the cows to prevent the other animals from getting stressed before it becomes noticeable. Because now only a part of the animals has to be followed, it is easier, more accurate and more reliable.
