abstract The invention comprises a solution of dinitrogen tetroxide in a mixture of acetic and nitric acids wherein the molar ratio of acetic to nitric acid is from 0.5 to 3 to 1. The solution, which may contain up to 15% by weight of water, may be prepared by absorbing N2O4 in the acid mixture by countercurrent contact in a column at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 100 p.s.i.g. The acid mixture is preferably a substantially azeotropic mixture. The solution may be used for the oxidation isobutylene to a -hydroxyisobutyric acid (see Division C2). Specifications 785,152, 855,880 and 883,493 are referred to.ALSO:a -Hydroxyisobutyric acid is prepared by oxidising isobutylene with dinitrogen tetroxide in a reaction solvent comprising a mixture of acetic and nitric acids having the dinitrogen tetroxide absorbed therein, wherein the molar ratio of acetic to nitric acids in the reaction solvent is from 0.5 to 3 to 1. The reaction is carried out at below 40 DEG C., and preferably below 10 DEG C. The N2O4 may be dissolved in a mixture of acetic and nitric acids and then the isobutylene passed into the resultant solution or, alternatively, the N2O4 may be dissolved in a first mixture of acetic and nitric acids, isobutylene may be dissolved in a second mixture of acetic and nitric acids (thus forming t-butyl acetate and t-butyl nitrate), and the resulting solutions combined. The preferred concentration of N2O4 in the acid mixture is between 20% and 60% by weight although smaller amounts may be used. Desirably at least one mole and preferably 3 moles of N2O4 is used for each mole of isobutylene. In addition to a -hydroxyisobutyric acid the oxidation yields a -nitratoisobutyric acid, a -nitratoisobutyraldehyde, a -hydroxyisobutyraldehyde and a -(a -hydroxyisobutyroxy)-isobutyric acid which may be converted to further a -hydroxyisobutyric acid by further oxidation and/or hydrolysis. Specifications 785,152, 855,880 and 883,493 are referred to.ALSO:A mixture of acetic and nitric acids wherein the molar ratio of acetic to nitric acid is from 0,5 to 3 : 1 is used for separating dinitrogen tetroxide or isobutylene from gases containing them. Dinitrogen tetroxide may be separated from carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen and nitrous oxide while isobutylene may be separated from complex mixtures of hydrocarbon gases containing both saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. In Example 6 isobutylene is separated from a mixture of isobutane, butene-1, isobutylene, butene-2, n-butane, butadiene and trans butene-2 and in Example 8 isobutylene is separated from a mixture of n-butane, isobutane, propane, isobutylene, butene-1 and trans butene-2. Specifications 785,152, 855,880 and 883,493 are referred to.
