abstract | An elastomeric copolymer is derived from components comprising (a) ethylene (b) an ~a-olefin, (c) a non-conjugated polyene (C) having one C=C bond that is copolymerisable using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst , and opt. a non-conjugated polyene (D) which in the molecule contains two or more C=C bonds that are copolymerisable using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst, where the copolymer has the following properties: (i) the wt ratio between the ethylene content and the ~a-olefin content is 80/20-40/60 (ii) the polyene (C) content is 4-30 wt% relative to the polymer (iii) the polyene (D) content is 0-5 wt% relative to the polymer and (iv) a branching coefficient BC, for which the following holds. 0.57-0.02 \* [C] \~ BC \~ 0.7 [C] = polyene (C) content of the polymer (wt%). (v) Also claimed is (1) an elastomeric copolymer which has a branching coefficient BC*, for which the following holds. 0.57-0.022\* [C] \~ BC*\~ 0.7 BC* = g'(III)/MWD +~ED (0.25\*[D]0.5) [C] = polyene (C) content of the polymer (wt%), [D] = polyene (D) content of the polymer (wt% relative to the total wt of the polymer) ~ED = summation of all contributions to BC* of the polyenes D present in the elastomeric copolymer; (2) a process for the prepn of elastomeric copolymers using a catalyst compsn comprising Gp 3, 4, 5, or 6 transition metal and Gp 1, 2, 12 or 13 organometallic cpd where the catalyst compsn also comprises cpd of formula (I); Ar-CXY-COZ(R)m (I) X= halogen, Y = H, 1-30C alkyl gp, 6-30C aromatic gp or a halogen, Z = O or N, R = H 1-30C alkyl gp or 6-30C aromatic gp, Ar = 6-30C aromatic gp and m=1 or 2; (3) an article made wholly or partly from the elastomeric compsn. |
