abstract | A METHOD FOR MAKING COMPOST IS DESCRIBED WHEREIN THE SUBSTRATE IS SUBSTANTIALLY COMPRISED OF OIL PALM HARVEST REFUSE MATERIAL, INCLUDING AT LEAST PALM KERNEL CAKE (PKC) AND EMPTY FRUIT BUNCHES (EFB). AN INOCULANT OF AQUEOUS MIXTURE OF MOLASSES, MESOCARP FIBRES AND EFB COMPOSTS, RAW PKC IS PREPARED AND INOCULATED ONTO A SUBSTRATE COMPRISING PKC. THE PKC SUBSTRATES ARE PREFERABLY ADDED WITH ROCK PHOSPHATE, EFB FIBRES AND EFB ASH. MOISTURE CONTENT IS ADJUSTED TO AND MAINTAINED AT ABOVE 50% AND TEMPERATURE AT BELOW 70�C. THE INOCULATED SUBSTRATE IS TURNED REGULARLY TO KEEP THE OXYGEN LEVEL AT ABOVE 12%. ALKALINE MATERIAL IS ADDED TO CORRECT THE PH. OUR EFFICACY TRIALS SHOW THAT UP TO 100% OF SOIL MAY BE SUBSTITUTED WITH OUR COMPOST WITHOUT ANY TOXICITY AND 25% OF OUR COMPOST TO SOIL BY VOLUME IS THE OPTIMAL MIXTURE. THE RESULTANT COMPOST ALSO CONTAINS HIGH LEVELS OF HUMIC AND FULVIC ACIDS WHICH MAY BE EXTRACTED TO MAKE LIQUID FERTILIZERS. |
