abstract DASHEEN STARCH HYDROLYSED IN THE PRESENCE OF INSOLUBLE METAL SALTS FORMED IN SITU IS AN EFFECTIVE FLOCCULANT FOR DESTABILIZING DILUTE AS WELL AS THICK SLUDGE SUSPENSIONS. THE STARCH IN THE FORM OF AQUEOUS SUSPENSION IN A CONCENTRATION OF 2 TO 6 GMS PER 100 MLS OF WATER IS HEATED AT ABOUT 90?C IN THE PRESENCE OF SOLUBLE METAL SALTS WHICH WILL FORM AN INSOLUBLE SALT IN SITU. SALTS OF METALS SUCH AS SODIUM, POTASSIUM, AMMONIUM, MAGNESIUM, CALCIUM AND ALUMINIUM AND THE RESPECTIVE ANIONS SULPHATES, ACETATES, CHLORIDES, NITRATES, CHLORATES, BROMIDES, IODIDES, THIOCUYANATES, PHOSPHATES MAY BE EMPLOYED DURING THE HYDROLYSIS. THE FLOCCULANT SO FORMED IS EFFECTIVE WHEN USED IN THE TREATMENT OF BITUMINOUS TAR SANDS TAILINGS AND IN PHOSPHATES SLIMES.
