abstract A process is described for the production of cyclohexanedimethanol by hydrogenation of a dialkyl cyclohexanedicarboxylate comprising the steps of: a) providing a hydrogenation zone containing an improved copper catalyst charge with granular reduced manganese; b) forming a vaporous feed stream of a hydrogenatable material comprising a cyclohexanedicarboxylate and about 0.1% to 15% by weight of an acidic material at a feed temperature in the range of about 150 aproximadamente8C to 350¦8C and which is above the dew point of the feed stream and at a feed pressure that is in the range of approximately 10.34 bar to 137.90 bar, the vapor mixture has a gas containing a known proportion of gas containing hydrogen: dialkyl cyclohexanedicarboxylate ;, c) feed the hydrogenation stream in the hydrogenation zone that is effective in keeping the reaction mixture in contact with the catalyst above its dew point; e) pass the steam feed stream through the hydrogenation zone; and f) recovering a product stream containing cyclohexanedimethanol from the hydrogenation zone.
