Methods, nucleic acid sequences and spirodella or spirodellum nodule plant cultures transformed for the expression and secretion of biologically active polypeptides from genetically designed spirodella are provided. The expression of recombinant polypeptides is enhanced by modification of the nucleotide sequence of the "cassette" of expression encoding the polypeptide for improved expression in spirodella. The recovery of biologically active polypeptides from spirodela is enhanced by binding the biologically active polypeptide to a signal peptide that directs the secretion of the polypeptide into the culture medium. |
