titleOfInvention | REGULATION OF THE METALOPROTEINASE GEN EXPRESSION OF THE MATRIX USING SPECIFIC AND SELECTIVE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTROMAGNETIC SIGNALS. |
abstract | Methods and devices for regulating the expression of the matrix metalloproteinase gene in cartilage cells through the application of fields generated by specific and selective electrical and electromagnetic signals in the treatment of diseased or injured articular cartilage. Gene expression is understood as ascending regulation or descending regulation of the process by which specific portions (genes) of the human genome (DNA) are transcribed into mRNA and subsequently translated into protein. Methods and devices are provided for the desired treatment of injured or diseased cartilage tissue that include generating specific and selective electrical and electromagnetic signals that generate optimized fields for reducing the expression of the matrix metalloproteinase gene and exposing cartilage tissue to the fields generated by the specific and selective signals in order to regulate the expression of the matrix metalloproteinase gene in cartilage tissue. The resulting methods and devices are useful for the desired treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, cartilage injury, cartilage defects and tumor metastases. |
