ARSENIC METER. |
abstract |
A field test kit for analyzing arsenic concentration in water samples includes a portable infrared beam photometer to measure the light absorbency in water samples. An infrared light emitting diode (120A, 120B), is configured to direct a beam of light through a sample. A photodetector diode (130A, 130B) measures the intensity of the light that passes through the sample. The photodetector output voltages (130A 130B) refer to the light absorbed in the sample and are displayed on an LCD screen (160). To test the presence of arsenic, molybdenum blue complexes are used. The light absorbency of a sample with both arsenates and phosphates bound in molybdenum blue complexes is compared with the light absorbency of a reference sample where phosphates but not arsenates are bound and converted. A quantitative value for arsenic concentration in the water sample is determined from the differential light absorbency of the two samples. |
