| abstract | An apparatus for adjusting the temperature of a patient's body comprises a housing that defines an interior space to receive at least a portion of a patient's body therein; the housing is adapted to seal substantially, enclosing the portion of the patient's body within the interior space with the housing; Heat transfer fluid can then be circulated through the interior space of the housing by an inlet and outlet, so that it flows over the patient's body in direct liquid contact therewith to promote heat transfer between the patient's body and said heat transfer liquid; the heat transfer liquid may be hotter or colder than the patient's body temperature, to heat or cool the portion; controlled cooling can be used to induce therapeutic hypothermia, while controlled heating can be used to counteract unwanted hypothermia; The apparatus further comprises a portable control unit that includes a liquid supply system, a power source, a control system and a user interface for mechanically operating and controlling the liquid supply system. |
