abstract A sequence or peptide isolated from the early protein region of the coding of e2, e6 or e7 of the human papillomavirus that is soluble in an aqueous medium, and characterized by a relative lack of trytophan, residues of methionine and cysteine, and an abundance relative residue of glycine and asparagine. The isolated sequences of the protein or peptides are also disclosed in the early regions of the coding of e2, e6 or e7 of hpv 16 and 18 and methodologies to detect or diagnose cancer or cell abnormalities may include the detection and / or diagnosis of precancerous conditions or premalas, cervical dysplasia, cervical carcinoma, koilocytosis, hyperkeratosis, intraepithelial lesions, and other cancers. Preferably, the novel methodologies for detecting and / or diagnosing cancer or cellular abnormalities of the present invention may include steps (1) reacting a sample of body fluid or tissue with isolated sequences or peptides of the protein; (2) forming an antibody-peptide-antibody complex; and (3) detecting the antibody-antibody-peptide complex.
