Sorbent compositions are described in materials that form particles that are suitable for the removal of sulfur from cracking gasoline or diesel fuel streams, which have increasing porosity, improved resistance to deactivation through the addition of a calcium compound selected from the group consisting of calcium sulfate, calcium silicate, calcium phosphate or calcium aluminate to the support system comprising zinc oxide, silica and alumina having on it a promoter wherein the promoter is a metal, metal oxide or precursor of a metal oxide the metal being selected from the group consisting of cobalt, nickel, iron, manganese, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, silver, tin and vanadium or mixtures thereof, and where the valence of the promoter has been substantially reduced to 2 or less. A process is also provided for the preparation of such sorbent systems as well as the use thereof for the desulfurization of cracking gasolines or diesel fuels. |
