Cyclic and analog glycerophosphates thereof (GCs) have been shown to exercise neuronal stimulation activities in target cells. Such activities include stimulation of neuronal overgrowth, stimulation of nerve growth, provision of environmental dopaminotropic support in a diseased portion of the brain, prevention of degeneration and recovery of nerves. These activities of the GCs make them useful for the treatment of various disorders including, but not limited to, mental disorders such as, for example, schizophrenia, dementia or disorders that result in learning disabilities. In sum, these GCs can be used for the treatment of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, conditions that result from exposure to harmful environmental factors or resulting from mechanical damage. GCs can also be used to treat in order to prevent or improve the occurrence of secondary degeneration in additional nerves ("nerve recovery"). |
