abstract | Rosin esters modified by light colored phenolic compound suitable for use as, for example, viscose in adhesive compositions are provided. Resins may be prepared by reacting together rosin, a phenolic compound, formaldehyde or a reactive equivalent thereof, and an organic compound containing non-phenolic hydroxyl, in the presence of at least one lightening agent selected from of phenol sulfide compounds, phosphoric acids, phosphorous acid esters, and hypophosphite salts. The formaldehyde or reactive equivalent is present in an amount ranging from 1.1 to about 3.5 equivalents of ûCHO fractions per 1 equivalent of the Ar-OH fraction of the phenolic compound, with the purpose of obtaining rosin esters having desirably clear color, and weight adequately low molecular, to function effectively as viscous. |
