abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2'-hydroxy-diphenyl-2-phosphinic acid in the form of a commercial mixture with 6-hydroxy- (6H) -dibenzo- (c, e), (1,2) -oxaphosphorine, the process being carried out on a commercial scale, this being simpler and cheaper than the previous ones, as a reaction in a single container without separating intermediate products and avoiding a distillation step, said process comprising the steps of: (a) adding o-phenyl-phenol to a mixture of PCl3 and a Lewis acid as a catalyst while simultaneously heating the reaction mixture; then the reaction mixture breaks up; (b) the resulting reaction mixture is allowed to cool and, with continuous stirring, hydrolyzes by mixing it first with water and then with a lower alkanol; (c) the product is then crystallized and stirring is continued, and (d) the crystalline product obtained is sucked, washed and dried. Furthermore, the invention relates to a commercial mixture thus prepared to produce copolycondensible fireproof substances for polyester fibers by producing a direct reaction of the mixture with itaconic acid or itaconic acid compounds, optionally together with one or more diols.
