abstract The invention provides methods for preparing water insoluble polysaccharide sponges and sponges obtained by means of said methods; The methods comprise: providing an aqueous solution of a soluble polysaccharide; freeze the solution; treating the frozen solution with a water-miscible organic solvent such as isopropanol to effect solvent-water exchange in the freezing solution; and drying the resulting polysaccharide material; the organic solvent contains interlocking agent such as calcium chloride to make the polysaccharide insoluble in water in the solvent exchange step (c); the resulting materials are more comfortable and less friable than freeze-dried polysaccharide sponges.
