abstract This invention relates to the synthesis of a latex that can be used in the manufacture of self-crosslinking, water reducible coating compositions, such as paints, that do not contain volatile organic compounds or contain extremely low levels thereof. The latex formulated coatings of this invention offer an environmental advantage, such as excellent solvent resistance, excellent flexibility, and excellent resistance to ultraviolet light. This invention more specifically describes a water reducible coating composition that is comprised of (1) water; (2) a resin having repeating units that are derived from (a) about 30 to about 75 percent by weight of vinyl aromatic monomers, (b) about 20 to about 65 percent by weight of alkyl acrylate monomers, (c) from about 1 to about 8 weight percent of propenoic acid alkyl monomers, and (d) from about 0.5 to about 5 weight percent of acryloxyalkenyl-trialkoxysilane monomers, based on 100 weight percent monomers; (3) a wetting agent; and (4) a defoamer. Gammamethacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane is a representative example of a highly preferred acryloxyalkenyl trialkoxysilane monomer.
