abstract Toluene diisocyanate is produced by nitration of toluene to produce dinitrotoluene, hydrogenation of nitrotoluneo, optionally the presence of a solvent or diluent, to produce a crude solution of toluenediamine and reaction water, processing the crude solution of toluenediamine and water to produce a intermediate mixture of toluenediamine and water where the processing is interrupted to result in a water content of approximately 1-40% by weight, preferably approximately 2-10% by weight of the intermediate mixture, transporting this intermediate mixture from a first Production medium to a second production medium, whereby the intermediate mixture of TDA and water is terminated to produce dry, commercial grade toluenediamine, and followed by phosgenation of toluenediamine to give toluene diisocyanate. It is optional dry before phosgenation. The invention also relates to intermediate mixtures of toluenediamine and water having a freezing point of at most 95 degree C, and to the use of these intermediate mixtures to produce toluenediisocyanate. It is preferable that the use of these intermediate mixtures to produce toluene diisocyanate be done at a site (or location) that is different from the site of production of the intermediate mixtures of toluene diamine and water.
