abstract The present invention relates to methods of manufacturing a heterogeneous polymer mixture comprising one or more anionic polymers, one or more cationic polymers, and one or more non-ionic polymers, such method comprises: (a) adding to a non-neutral solution a first amount of the polymerization initiator and one more cationic anionic monomers, wherein each monomer has the same charge; (b) adding a second amount of the polymerization initiator and one or more non-ionic monomers; (c) adding a third amount of the polymerization initiator and one or more ionic monomers that are oppositely charged with the monomers of (a); (d) add in stages, a fourth amount of the polymerization initiator to react with any residual monomer, and (e) neutralize the resulting polymer mixture. Heterogeneous polymer mixtures containing polymers formed from one or more anionic monomers are also claimed. , cationic, and non-ionic, either polymerized in situ or separately and then combined. Methods for increasing the filler content of a sheet of paper or cardboard are also claimed, such method comprises: (a) combining the heterogeneous polymer mixture with a precipitated calcium carbonate filler; (b) combine the resulting mixture with a pulp suspension; and (c) process the mixture of the resulting suspension to form a sheet of paper or cardboard. Finally, methods for increasing the filler content of a sheet of paper or cardboard are also claimed, such method comprises: (1) combining either the heterogeneous mixture or the precipitated calcium carbonate filler with a pulp suspension; (2) combine the remaining component with the pulp suspension; and (c) process the mixture of the resulting pulp suspension to form a sheet of paper or cardboard.
