A method for the production of a product comprising ethyl levulinate glycerol ketal or ethyl levulinate propylene glycol ketal comprising reacting either glycerol or propylene glycol with ethyl levulinate in the presence of a homogeneous or heterogeneous catalyst system in a reactor system. Ethyl levulinate and either glycerol or propylene glycol, are heated to remove water, polyol, and excess ethyl levulinate. The excess ethyl levulinate and polyol are recycled back to the reactor. The product is distilled in a specific manner and optionally treated by a stabilizing agent or bed of acid species removal, to obtain a composition comprising ethyl levulinate glycerol ketal or ethyl levulinate propylene glycol ketal, wherein the composition comprises less of or equal to about 2% by weight of contaminants. |
