abstract Methods and apparatus for monitoring air samples for the presence of the explosive TATP are disclosed; a preferred approach employs proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS); The system can be continuously operated on a real time or near real time basis; a supply tube of specific dimensions and materials is used to introduce the sample into the ionization chamber which in turn generates the ions that are supplied to the mass spectrometer to determine the m/z values; the system can employ a plurality of ionization chambers to reduce the number of false negative identifiers; a multiple entry ion funnel can be used to combine the ions from each of the ionization chambers; chemical ionization can be used; a validation module can be used to reduce the number of false positive identifiers.
