titleOfInvention COMPOSITIONS OF HYDROPHOBIC POLYMERS CONTAINING VINYLAMINE AND THEIR USE IN PAPER MANUFACTURING APPLICATIONS.
abstract Described herein are vinylamine-containing hydrophobic polymers useful as paper softening performance additives to improve paper softness with little or no negative effect on dry paper strength properties. Hydrophobic vinylamine-containing polymers are produced by incorporating hydrophobic functional property into the primary amine portion of vinylamine-containing polymers through reactions with reactive hydrophobic groups. The hydrophobically modified vinylamine-containing polymers can further be used as base polymers for polymerization with a vinyl monopter by free radical initiated polymerization. Compositions of vinylamine-containing hydrophobic polymers have shown improved smoothness, reduced coefficient of friction for paper products, while maintaining or improving dry strength properties of paper products.
