abstract A polymeric ionic compound comprising at least 5 imidazole groups is disclosed, said compound can be obtained by the simultaneous reaction of glyoxal, formaldehyde, at least one C4-C8 alkylenediamine, at least one protic acid, and an alkylamine C8-C20, especially through the simultaneous reaction of glyoxal, formaldehyde, hexylenediamine, acetic acid and dodecylamine. The polymeric ionic compound comprising at least 5 imidazole groups shows advantageous antimicrobial properties, and can be used in various formulations for the fields of application, including plant protection, personal care, domestic care, industrial, institutional or hospital disinfection, the protection of materials, or pharmaceutical products.
