A single monobenzoate useful as a plasticizer or coalescer for polymer dispersions, which includes, without limitation, architectural and other coatings, paints, OEM coatings, special use coatings, overprint varnishes, inks, nail polish, floor waxes and the like. The monobenzoate comprises 3-phenyl propyl benzoate, a benzoate ester previously known as a flavoring and fragrance agent, but not previously used as a plasticizer or coalescer in polymeric applications. The monobenzoate of the invention provides an alternative phthalate-free plasticizer or coalescer with low VOC content, which is compatible with a wide variety of polymers. Depending on the application, the advantages offered by the use of the benzoate of the invention include, among other things, excellent solvation properties, viscosity stability, improved rheology, good film formation and comparable or superior gloss, hardness, adhesion, resistance to water and alkali, tensile and sanding resistance, resistance to bonding with each other, color density, time to dry to the touch, open time and MFFT, compared to those achieved by traditional plasticizers or coalescers. |
