abstract | The present invention includes coating compositions and methods for coating substrates using the coating compositions. In some embodiments of the invention, a coating composition is prepared by a method that includes the steps of: a) preparing a latex emulsion by a method that includes mixing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component in a carrier to form a monomer emulsion , and reacting the monomer emulsion with an initiator to form the latex emulsion, wherein the latex emulsion is prepared using an acetoacetate compound, b) preparing an oily grafted copolymer with hydroxyl function by a method that includes reacting a Vegetable oil epoxidized with a hydroxyl-functional material in the presence of an acid catalyst to form an hydroxyl-function oily polyol, and reacting the hydroxyl-functional oily polyol with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component in the presence of an initiator to form the grafted copolymer of oily polyol with hydroxyl function, and c) mixing the latex emulsion and a crosslinker then adding the oil grafted copolymer with hydroxyl function to form the coating composition. The coating compositions may exhibit nothing or minimal opalescence, nothing or minimal color absorption, and commercially acceptable adhesion. Coated substrates with the coating compositions of the invention are also described. |
