titleOfInvention HEMOSTATIC AGENTS AND USE PROCEDURES.
abstract Hemostatic modified chitosan agents include reverse micelles (10) having an outer hydrophobic coating (12) of suitable biocompatible hydrophobic components such as alkanes and positively charged hydrophilic chitosan residues (14) enclosed within the hydrophobic coating (12). The hydrophobic coating (12) can be formed by hydrophobic moieties attached to one end of the chitosan polymer molecules while maintaining sufficiently reactive (positively charged) amine groups in the rest of the chitosan polymers to effectively coagulate the blood. The resulting reverse micelles (10) have the ability to penetrate mucous membranes such as the nasal mucosa (20) or otherwise penetrate to sites of hemorrhage protected or partially protected by mucosa or other tissues. When exposed to erythrocytes (24) that come from the site of hemorrhage (26), the positively charged interior of the reverse micelles makes its way through the hydrophobic coating (12) to combine with the negatively charged erythrocytes (24), coagulating the blood in this way and attenuating or stopping the bleeding.
