titleOfInvention | ALKALINE DESORTION PROCESS - ORGANIC AMENDMENT FOR THE RESTORATION OF SOIL CONTAMINATED BY HYDROCARBONS AND WATER REPELLENT. |
abstract | The present invention describes a process for reducing water repellency of soils with residual concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons, for example after a natural remediation or mitigation project. It consists of the application of dilute solutions of sodium hydroxide and mechanical agitation, to solubilize hydrocarbons with polar groups and remove them from the soil surfaces, thus releasing these surfaces to interact in a normal way with water, reducing water repellency, inducing normal water infiltration, increasing soil moisture and preventing erosion. It can also be combined with calcium oxides or hydroxides to supplement the alkalinity of sodium hydroxide. You can also incorporate washings with simple water to correct excess salinity and alkalinity if necessary, or you can take advantage of natural rainfall. If necessary, organic amendments are incorporated into the soil after chemical treatment to improve fertility (field capacity, cation exchange capacity). Finally, it is sown with vegetation, typically pastures, to obtain a vegetation cover, prevent erosion, and conserve soil fertility. Alternatively, it can be allowed to recolonize naturally with plant species of the medium to obtain plant cover. |
