PHOTOCROMATIC DEVICES OF TRANSLATION POLARIZATION TO CIRCULATE AND METHODS TO PREPARE THE SAME. |
abstract |
The present invention provides optical elements comprising a linear polarization photochromic element and a birefringent layer that circulates or elliptically polarizes transmitted radiation. The linear polarization photochromic element comprises a substrate and either: (1) a coating comprising an aligned and thermo-reversible dichroic and photochromic compound having an average absorption coefficient of at least 1.5 in an activated state, and is operable to change from a first absorption state to a second absorption state in response to actinic radiation, to return again to the first absorption state in response to thermal energy, and linearly polarize the radiation transmitted in at least one of the two states; or (2) a polymer sheet at least partially ordered and connected to the substrate; and a thermo-reversible photochromic and dichroic compound that is at least partially aligned with the polymer sheet and has an average absorption coefficient greater than 2.3 in its activated state. |
