HARD FLEXIBLE COATINGS AND SUBSTRATES COVERED WITH THE SAME. |
abstract |
One method of providing a flexible hard coating on a substrate includes the use of a double cure silane having a UV curable group and a thermally curable silane group. The hydrolyzed double cure silane and a portion of the silanol groups are condensed with silica to give a fluid coating composition that is then applied to a substrate. A first cure with UV radiation causes the coating to harden into a flexible hard coating that allows the substrate to be thermoformed in relief without damaging the coating. The substrate is then heated to thermally cure the hard coating in order to provide a completely cured and abrasion resistant hard coating. |
