A method of manufacturing a metal terephthalate polymer from ethylene terephthalate polyester includes reacting the ethylene terephthalate polyester with a metal compound in a non-aqueous melting environment at an elevated temperature. The elevated temperature will be greater than 270 ° C, and preferably it rises to a temperature of approximately 520 ° C. The method is preferably carried out at a low pressure. The method can be used in the recycling of passenger car tire fragments to produce a carbon black rich powder that is enriched in the metal-terephthalate polymer. |
