Aspirin is one of the most widely used drugs in the treatment of inflammation, pain and fever. Recently an application has been found in the prevention of heart attacks and infarction and is being studied as a cancer chemopreventive agent. Despite its value, aspirin continues to be little used because it causes gastric bleeding. Technology under development potentially removes this problem. It is designed to reduce contact between the drug and the intestinal wall. An isosorbide aspirinate prodrug compound is provided. The compound has the general structure as shown in the general formula (1) wherein Y is alkyl ester of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, alkoxy ester of 3 to 10 carbon atoms, an aryl ester, an alkylaryl ester of 1 at 8 carbon atoms or -C (O) ORanii, where Ranillo is an aromatic or non-aromatic 5-membered ring having at least one substituted heteroatom for a carbon of the ring system, which may be unsubstituted or substituted with at least a nitric oxide releasing group. |
