abstract The present invention relates to a process for preparing morphine compounds with a low content of a-β unsaturated compounds comprising the steps of: (i) contacting the compound with a crude morphine base, at a pH above 13 and under conditions that allow Michael's addition reaction of the unsaturated α-β compound (s) (ii) the separation of morphine compounds from the reaction mixture, and (iii) where appropriate, separating the product formed from morphine compounds. It is a composition comprising at least 99% by dry weight of morphine compounds or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and a content of α-β-unsaturated compounds of less than 100 ppm.
