abstract The present invention is directed to a method for preparing a cellulose reactive polyvinyl amide adduct and a composition resulting from the method. The preparation of the cellulose reactive adduct is carried out near a Critical Concentration defined herein. When the reaction is carried out near this Critical Concentration, the risk of gelation is minimized, the glyoxal consumed is maximized, and the shelf life is increased. Additionally, the glyoxalated vinyl amides of the present invention impart better dry and wet reinforcement efficiency to paper and cardboard when compared to the adducts described in the previously described technique.
