The present invention relates to the new industrial use of a carboxylic compound as a lubricant, wherein the carboxylic composition comprises the reaction product of an acylating composition substituted with a compound selected from the group consisting of (a) amine, having within its structure at least one HN group, (b) alcohol, (c) reactive metal or reactive metal compound, and (d) a combination of two or more of any of (a) to (c), wherein said substituted acylating composition it comprises the reaction product of: (A) polyalkene having an Mn value of 1300 to about 5000 and an Mw / Mn value of about 1.5 to 4; (B) one or more acidic compounds of the formula wherein X and X 'are the same or different with the proviso that at least one of X and X' is such that the substituted acylating composition can function as a carboxylic acylating agent; (C) chlorine; where the molar ratio of (A) :( B), is such that there are at least 1.3 moles of (B) for each mole of (A), where the number of moles of (A) is the quotient of the total weight of (A) divided by the value of Mn, and the amount of chlorine employed is such as to provide at least about 0.2 moles of chlorine for each mole of (B) reacted with (A), said substituted acylating composition having at least 1.3 groups derived from (B) for each equivalent weight of substituent groups derived from (A). |
