The invention provides a process for the preparation of enantiomerically pure mirtazapine, said process comprising the step of ring closure of a compound of formula (II) wherein X is a leaving group, said step comprising treating with an acid to form a compound of formula (II) with enantiomeric excess with an enantiomeric excess, ring closure, by treatment with an appropriate acid-free solvent or a suitable combination of an acid and an organic solvent. |
