abstract | The present invention relates to a cathode material comprising particles (1) surrounding particles of one or more electrochemically active hydroxide cathode materials and comprising a substantially continuous and uniform encapsulant layer. The encapsulant layer is fabricated from a material that can be converted to a highly conductive form in the oxidation step during filling or processing of the electrode and which does not return to its previous form in the subsequent discharge step of the electrode. Preferably, the electrochemically active hydroxide comprises at least nickel hydroxide. The encapsulation layer is preferably prepared from a cobalt salt solution prepared from at least cobalt hydroxide or cobalt oxyhydroxide and which may be a cobalt sulfate solution by precipitation. An electrode comprising an electrochemically active material and a precipitation process for producing said material. |
