abstract | Dinitrotoluene is a reaction scheme in which a portion of mononitrotoluene is present in the reaction mixture, and is prepared by nitriding toluene with nitric acid under adiabatic conditions. The nitriding reaction mixture is then treated to remove at least 5% by weight of water before the reaction mixture is separated into acid and organic phases. The dinitrotoluene product is recovered from the organic phase. The acid phase can be recycled after addition of nitric acid to replace the nitric acid used in the nitrification reaction. |
