titleOfInvention Method of preparing dinitrotoluene
abstract The present invention relates to a two-step process for producing dinitrotoluene from toluene and nitric acid in the presence of sulfur phase in the presence of nitrified acid consisting of certain components in the presence of sulfur phase. The reaction product of the first phase is separated into an acid phase and an organic phase containing mononitrotoloene. Some water is removed from the acid phase, nitric acid is added and the resulting mixture is recycled. The dinitrotoluene is prepared by further nitrating the organic phase containing mononitrotoluene. This nitration mixture is also separated into acid and organic phases. The acid phase is treated to remove some water, nitric acid is added and the resulting acid mixture is recycled. Dinitrotoluene is recovered from the organic phase. This method is advantageous in that dilute nitric acid can be used and the heat of nitration reaction can be used.
