The novel enlarged porphyrin-like compounds, porfacyanin (Pc) and lotracyanin-like compounds with absorbance maxima in the range of 400-850 nanometers are useful for detecting and treating targeted tissues, cells and viruses. Do. The use of Pc of the present invention allows the irradiation to include wavelengths other than those absorbed by the blood. Pc of the invention may also be conjugated to a target-specific moiety, such as an immunoglobulin or fragment thereof, to target tissue or cells specific for radiation therapy. The use of these materials allows greater depth of therapeutic penetration and greater specificity of the target tissue or cell. When coupled with a suitable paramagnetic ion or radioisotope, the Pc of the invention is suitable for use in nuclear magnetic resonance and radioimaging. A novel method of synthesizing Pc of the present invention is disclosed. |
