The present invention relates to a process for preparing inorganic gels by reacting tetraalkoxy orthosilicates, tetraalkoxy titanates and tetraalkoxy zirconates with strong carboxylic acids. The process of the present invention does not initially require water as a reactant. The method of the present invention provides an inorganic gel having an optically transparent, very small pore size, a narrow pore size distribution, and a high specific surface area useful for wear resistant coatings, optics, catalyst or enzyme supports, gas separators, or chromatographic packings.
