abstract | The present invention relates to a method for producing porous copolymer beads by seeding polymerization using gel copolymer seed particles. The method includes providing a plurality of gel copolymer seed particles prepared by first polymerizing one or more first monovinylidene monomers and a first crosslinking monomer. Thereafter, the seed particles are absorbed into the second monomer mixture containing at least one second monovinylidene monomer, a second crosslinking monomer and a phase separation diluent and polymerized therein. The method is characterized in that the first monovinylidene monomer is selected such that the phase separation diluent and the second monovinylidene monomer can absorb an amount of seed particles sufficient to form the porous copolymer. The resulting porous copolymer beads have a stable polymeric structure and good physical properties that make them useful for preparing ion exchange resins and polymeric absorbents. |
