The present invention relates to a cathode active material capable of realizing a lithium secondary battery having excellent initial charge and discharge efficiency, lifespan characteristics, and thermal stability, and a method for manufacturing the same, wherein the cathode active material of the present invention has a molar ratio of Ni of 80 mol% A core portion comprising the above lithium transition metal oxide; and a shell portion having a layered structure formed on the core portion and including a lithium transition metal oxide having a molar ratio of Mn of 30 mol% or more of the total transition metal, and satisfying Equation 1 below.
